Project name: Weschar

The Weschar Project was developed to convert low-grade thermal coal into a high-quality char product for Rio Tinto’s Hi-Smelt process.
Following the 2008 global financial crisis, Rio Tinto shut down the Hi-Smelt facility, leading to the decommissioning of the Weschar plant due to the loss of its sole customer.
The plant was fully engineered, procured, and constructed by Ansac at a capital cost 2.5 times lower than competing bids. Although the syngas was flared and no power was generated, the project demonstrates the scalability, robustness, and maturity of the core pyrolysis technology used by Anergy, achieving a record throughput of 6 tonnes per hour.
